2006/03/23. As reported by Paradis, Russian distributor of the Ang Lee gay drama Brokeback Mountain, the film, which is the winner of a myriad of international awards, will be seen by moviegoers in 34 cities across Russia.

The film premiered on March 16th in Moscow and Saint Petersburg and will conclude its run in the city of Salavat in the Bashkortostan Republic at the end of May. As previously reported, earlier this year the Bashkortostan Republic President, Murtaza Rakhimov, spoke out against the "propaganda of same-sex love." However, the appeals of several politicians for the film's prohibition drowned under a torrent of positive reviews.

The March issue of the Russian Gay Magazine "Kvir" (Queer) is dedicated to Brokeback Mountain. Depicted on the cover are Ennis and Jack tenderly pressed up against one another. Actor Heath Ledger also appears on the cover of the popular weekly publication MK-Boulevard and Jake Gyllenhaal is featured on the cover of Russian GQ.

The National Portal of Russian Gays and Lesbians, Gay.Ru, maintains contact with Russian distributors of the film. A detailed listing of all movie theaters in the country where Brokeback Mountain will be playing is maintained on the site.

Indigo, a gay store in Moscow, has received exclusive rights from Universal Music Russia to retail the Soundtrack to the film. For the past month the CD has lead the Top Ten Most Popular Albums of Gays and Lesbians.

"The release of Brokeback Mountain on the Big Screen in Russia is an important event for gay society in the country," says the Editor in Chief of the gay magazine "Kvir" (Queer) Ed Mishin. "Especially now, when the Church and other conservative politicians are petitioning to obstruct the rights of sexual minorities, this picture, whose motto is 'Love is a Force of Nature,' is capable of positively influencing societal opinion of homosexuals."

Brokeback Mountain will be officially released on DVD in Russia on April 13, 2006.
