Seva Galkin’s works, varied as they might be, all have one distinctive feature, and I can’t even say I find it so absolutely attractive – it is a tendency for “the purity of style”, as a critic wrote in a review of his exhibition. Purity can turn into sterility, when style is actually lost, giving way to either commonplace ornamentality, or excessive simplicity. However, purity can as well be associated with innocence, even virginity of sorts, which, I admit, sounds strange if naked blokes are concerned. Seva photographs nude males. A naked body does not necessarily look erotic or beautiful, nor is it always able to. On the contrary, nakedness often conflicts with the environment. Sometimes an artist emphasizes this controversy, sometimes tries to ignore it.
